Katherine King and Rebeca Johnstone Sworn-In to the Moose Jaw Board of Police Commissioners
Katherine King and Rebeca Johnstone are the newest members of the Moose Jaw Board of Police Commissioners. Both were sworn in at the January Board of Police Commissioners meeting, held inside the multi-purpose classroom at the Moose Jaw Police Service headquarters.
King, who is a principal within the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division, says a parent from her school encouraged her to apply to the Board.
“I enjoy new experiences and learning about other fields of work,” she says. “I also believe it is important to understand and serve your community and help be part of positive change and growth.”
She adds that as a French Immersion school principal, she brings a strong foundation in community leadership, cultural competence, and collaborative problem‑solving to the Board of Police Commissioners.
Rebeca Johnstone, who is a commercial property owner in Moose Jaw, was also sworn into the Board in January.
Johnstone notes that she brings a community-focused perspective, among other important qualities, to the Board.
“I hope to bring common sense and a commitment to fairness, accountability, and thoughtful decision-making,” says Johnstone.
She notes that, as a mother, commercial and residential property owner, and Moose Jaw resident, she is deeply concerned about her community and the safety of its residents.
“I wanted to serve in a role where I could contribute to a strong, safe, and well-run city,” she explains.
Board chair, Commissioner James Murdock, was on hand to congratulate Johnstone and King on their new role.
“I’m pleased to welcome Rebeca Johnstone and Katherine King to the Board of Police Commissioners,” says Commissioner Murdock. “Their dedication, experience, and commitment to community oversight will strengthen the important work we do to support transparency, accountability, and public safety. I look forward to working alongside them as we continue serving the people of our city.”
King and Johnstone will join Commissioner Don Hand and Commissioner Kelly Baxter as civilian at-large members (residents of Moose Jaw, other than members of council). Commissioner James Murdock, Commissioner Jamey Logan, and Commissioner Patrick Boyle were also sworn in.
The role of the Moose Jaw Board of Police Commissioners is to provide general direction, policy, and priorities to the Moose Jaw Police Service. The Board also aids in the development of long-term plans for the Service and serves as a conduit to the public, helping to identify the community’s needs in terms of public safety and where police services can support those needs.
