Moose Jaw Police Service Swears in Five New Officers
On Thursday, July 9, 2026, the Moose Jaw Police Service, together with the Moose Jaw Board of Police Commissioners, swore in five new officers during a ceremony held at the Moose Jaw Public Library’s Performing Arts Theatre. In attendance were local MLAs, representatives from local organizations, the Chief Marshal of the Saskatchewan Marshal Service, and the Minister of Community Safety.
The Honourable David Chow, Judge of the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan, administered oaths to Constable Joel Robinson, Brett Weichel, Taylor Mazenc, Jasveer Singh, and Geoffrey LaBuick at this ceremony.
Cst. Robinson joined the MJPS on June 1, 2026, after previously serving with the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol. Recruits Weichel, Mazenc, Singh, and LaBuick will begin training at the Saskatchewan Police College later this month.
When asked what inspired them to pursue a career in policing with the Moose Jaw Police Service, the recruits shared the following:
Regina native Brett Weichel said:
“I’ve wanted to become a police officer for most of my life. As I started to work more in my career, more and more, I became that person—helping people out in their vulnerable times and responding to emergencies. I wanted to continue doing that in a larger setting and advance my career.”
He went on to say:
“I’m a person who likes to be challenged and pushed, and I think that Police College is going to be a great place for me to be able to do that, as well as learn from current officers and officers that have served in the past that have got the years of wisdom and experience to pass on to us.”
Taylor Mazenc, a long-time Moose Jaw resident, said:
“I chose to pursue a career with the Moose Jaw Police Service because I believe deeply in the responsibility citizens share to strengthen their community. Rather than simply benefiting from Moose Jaw, I am committed to contributing to what makes it an exceptional place to live.”
Mazenc added:
“I look forward to Police College as an opportunity to sharpen my skills, build effective teamwork, and grow as a reliable and capable individual.”
Jasveer Singh, who established roots in Moose Jaw after immigrating to Canada, said:
“I have always been driven by a desire to help others, and policing gives me the opportunity to make a lasting, positive impact in the community every day. Moose Jaw welcomed me with kindness and a strong sense of community, and it is the place where I built the foundation of my life in Canada.”
Born and raised in Moose Jaw, Geoffrey LaBuick said:
“I knew I wanted to be a cop since Grade 11.”
He added:
“I couldn’t be happier with being selected. The fact that I get to do it in my home community means everything to me.”
The ceremony also provided an opportunity to recognize current and former members of the Moose Jaw Police Service for promotions, retirement milestones, service recognition, and exemplary service through plaques presented by Chief of Police, Robert Davis.
Members recognized for recent promotions included Sergeant Shawn Mohle, who was promoted on January 20, 2025, and Superintendents Trish Seman and Randy Boechler, who were promoted on January 15, 2025. These promotions reflect decades of experience, leadership, and service across a wide range of roles. The Moose Jaw Police Service also acknowledges Sergeant Jay Sills and Staff Sergeants Jason Watt and Ryan Lawrence, who were unable to attend the ceremony but were also recognized for their recent promotions.
The Moose Jaw Police Service also recognized Jay-D Haughton for his service as Public Information and Strategic Communications Manager from September 2023 to April 2026. Through his work supporting organizational communications, media relations, and community engagement, Haughton made valuable contributions to the MJPS and helped strengthen communication and engagement with the community.
Plaques were also presented to honour the distinguished careers of Marlie Frei and Murray Rice as they concluded their service with the Moose Jaw Police Service. Together, Frei and Rice dedicated approximately 50 years of service across a variety of roles and demonstrated a steadfast commitment to keeping Moose Jaw safe with professionalism and integrity.
Chief Davis also recognized Superintendent Rick McKenna, recipient of the Police Exemplary Service Medal in recognition of 40 years of exemplary service. Since joining the Moose Jaw Police Service in 1985, Supt. McKenna has served in numerous operational and leadership roles, leaving a lasting impact on the organization through his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving the community.
