Downtown Businesses’ Vigilance Leads to Counterfeit Arrest

Starting on June 19, 2026, the Moose Jaw Police Service began receiving multiple reports of counterfeit currency being circulated throughout the city, culminating in an arrest on the afternoon of Sunday, June 21, 2026.

This arrest reflects a coordinated response between frontline business staff and members of the Moose Jaw Police Service. Police are highlighting this example as a demonstration of how police and the community can work together to protect the city.

Throughout the weekend, multiple businesses identified suspected counterfeit bank notes and promptly reported them to police. In one instance, an employee became suspicious after observing the suspect in possession of a large quantity of $50 and $100 bills. Police also noted that one of the targeted businesses had CCTV cameras positioned to capture the transaction, providing evidence that proved instrumental in identifying the suspect.

The information provided by businesses enabled investigators to identify a suspect, obtain a warrant for his arrest, and distribute his description to officers.

Police Chief Robert Davis, who was off duty at the time, observed an individual matching the description of the suspect in public and maintained visual contact until patrol officers were able to attend the scene and arrest the 36-year-old male. The suspect was subsequently charged with Possession of Counterfeit Money and Uttering Counterfeit Money.

“One of Moose Jaw Police Service’s core values is working together with our community, and this investigation is a strong example of that partnership in action,” said Zach Bachmann, Public Information Manager. “The vigilance and cooperation of the businesses involved were instrumental in this investigation and helped prevent additional businesses from being victimized.”

Moose Jaw Police Service encourages businesses to consider the measures that contributed to this investigation, including ensuring employees are attentive when handling currency, prepared to report suspicious activity, and supported by effective monitoring systems. Members of the public and businesses who suspect they have received counterfeit currency should avoid recirculating it and contact police immediately. Additional information on identifying counterfeit currency and the security features of Canadian bank notes is available through the Bank of Canada’s Counterfeit Prevention resources.
