Moose Jaw Police Service introduces a New Opportunity for Students: ViPER Safety Patrol
The Moose Jaw Police Service is excited to introduce a new opportunity for local students beginning or continuing post‑secondary studies this fall, who are interested in exploring a future in law enforcement and public safety.
This summer, we are launching the ViPER (Visible Proactive Engagement Response) Safety Patrol — a community‑focused initiative designed to give young people meaningful experience while helping keep Moose Jaw safe.
The ViPER program builds on a proven model developed by Chief Davis, who previously established The Watch in Lethbridge, Alberta — now celebrating its seventh year — as well as a Park Patrol program in Dryden, Ontario. These initiatives were inspired by innovative best practices he observed in Winnipeg, Vancouver, and Queensland, Australia.
“The ViPER is an opportunity for those considering a career in public safety to test the waters to see what aspects of public safety interest them.” Chief Davis said. “Ideally, we would like the ViPER to be a feeder league to a career in policing. But in my experience, some may realize that EMS, fire fighting, or social services appeals more to them – which is still a positive experience as it helps students select a career path and get exposure.”
As part of their role, ViPER team members will serve as additional eyes and ears for the Moose Jaw Police Service. They will support community safety initiatives such as Safe Walk, Visible Valuables, and bicycle safety programs. They will also assist with parking education and enforcement, and act as friendly ambassadors in Moose Jaw’s downtown.
Students interested in joining the ViPER Safety Patrol can apply online through the Moose Jaw Police Service website. Full program details and how to apply can be found on our website at www.mjpolice.ca.
We’re proud to offer this opportunity to local youth and look forward to the positive impact the ViPER Safety Patrol will have on our community.
